The Rangers closed out their non-district slate with a tough matchup against West Mesquite on Friday, Sept. 9, and fell short; losing 56-17.
Chisholm Trail won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. West Mesquite scored on their opening drive of the game, but the Ranger defense was stout and stopped the two point conversion.
On the ensuing possession, the Rangers marched down the field aided by the running game and two fourth down conversions; a fourth down run from Joey McGowen and a completion from McGowen to Brandon Olguin. Kamaron Brimmer had a reception to put the Rangers in field goal position, and Roman Hernandez drilled a 48-yard field goal to put the Rangers on the board and pull them within 6-3.
West Mesquite had a big second quarter, but the Rangers continued fighting, getting sacks and three and outs defensively.
In the second half, the Rangers kept battling; on a drive in the third quarter, Brimmer had a few big catches, McGowen broke a few tackles and Israel Kaloso capped off the scoring drive with a 26-yard run for a touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, McGowen set up another scoring drive with a burst up the middle of the field to set up first and goal at the one yard line. A short time later, he scored the Rangers' second touchdown of the evening.
Despite the Rangers coming up short on the scoreboard, senior Linebacker Dominick Berry led all tacklers with 14 on the evening and had an interception on the evening.
The Rangers will kick-off District 3-6A play on Friday, Sept. 16 with a trip to Pennington Field to take on L.D. Bell. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
